Totnes U12’s 33 : Exmouth U12’s 29
On a crowded Borough Park that saw 7 excellent games of rugby Totnes U12’s stepped out for their first game of the season against a historically strong Exmouth side. George Rivas started the game with a excellent and difficult drop kick that put immediate pressure on the Exmouth forwards.
The pressure from the Totnes forwards caused a turnover giving Totnes possession whish lead to a good period of territorial gain utilising both the forwards and backs in several phases of play. This in turn lead to Tom Tysoe scoring his first ever try for the Blues. Exmouth then rallied from the start and returned quickly with their first try which was immediately followed by a second giving them a half time lead of 10:7.
Early in the second period Totnes were again on the receiving end of some excellent backs play from Exmouth who increased their tally by a further two tries. After some encouraging words from the coaches the Totnes Forwards upped their game and started to dominate giving Totnes prolonged periods of pressure during which Tom O’Brien Made two excellent breaks from Mauls crossing the try line in both moves. Exmouth once again regained control and scored their fifth try of the match leaving Totnes 2 Tries behind.
With a change of tactics in the centres Daniel Smalldon (Captain) and Matt Smith Opened up the Exmouth line gaining 40 metres where during the second phase of play in Matt Smith scored his first try for Totnes. Totnes’ winning try was scored by Oscar Dilke who stole the ball from an Exmouth line-out and with his usual vigour forced himself over the try line.
With 3 minutes of play remaining Totnes made every tackle count to keep Exmouth in their own half with Daniel Samalldon continuing with his textbook display of tackling skills. However, in the dying seconds Exmouth broke through and bundled over the line. Unfortunately for them Michael Sandercock in his new role as full back was able to get under them to hold up the ball and stop it being grounded.
With 5 tries a piece the difference came with Conversion kicking where Exmouth converted 2 times to Totnes’ 4 giving the final score Totnes 33, Exmouth 29.
There were excellent performances from all of the Totnes Players but one player stood out as a real asset both offensively and defensively to claim ‘Man of the Match’ and that was debutant Tom Sawyer.
